What You Should Know Before Hiring A Contractor
(Tips to Remember)

1. Be Prepared

  • Know exactly what you want to accomplish.
  • Have sketches, photos, clippings, etc. on hand to illustrate what you want done.
  • Set a budget.
  • Be aware of your own local planning, zoning, and building department expectations and restrictions.
  • Plan your project carefully, including detailed plans, if necessary.

2. Interview

  • Interview your potential contractor. Try to select a knowledgeable, organized, experienced, and established contractor who will take a personal interest in the outcome of your project.
  • Ask what inconveniences might arise.

3. References

  • Ask for references from your contractor. Former customers will be happy to share details if you ask.

4. Buyer Beware

  • Never take the risk of hiring an unlicensed contractor.
  • Be cautious about paying for work not yet completed.
  • Make frequent inspections and consult your local building department.

5. Know the Basics

  • Have a general understanding of which trades may be required to perform the work for your project. If your project will require two or three different trades, hiring a general contractor is the best bet.
  • Be wary of contractors who ask you to pick up the building permit.

6. Check State License Status

7. Contracts

  • Obtain a written contract.
  • Make sure you understand the terms before you sign anything.
  • Put all change orders in writing.

Avoid making final payment until you have received a lien release from suppliers and subcontractors.
