What You Should Know Before Hiring A Contractor
(Tips to Remember)
1. Be Prepared
- Know exactly what you want to accomplish.
- Have sketches, photos, clippings, etc. on hand to illustrate what you want done.
- Set a budget.
- Be aware of your own local planning, zoning, and building department expectations and restrictions.
- Plan your project carefully, including detailed plans, if necessary.
2. Interview
- Interview your potential contractor. Try to select a knowledgeable, organized, experienced, and established contractor who will take a personal interest in the outcome of your project.
- Ask what inconveniences might arise.
3. References
- Ask for references from your contractor. Former customers will be happy to share details if you ask.
4. Buyer Beware
- Never take the risk of hiring an unlicensed contractor.
- Be cautious about paying for work not yet completed.
- Make frequent inspections and consult your local building department.
5. Know the Basics
- Have a general understanding of which trades may be required to perform the work for your project. If your project will require two or three different trades, hiring a general contractor is the best bet.
- Be wary of contractors who ask you to pick up the building permit.
6. Check State License Status
7. Contracts
- Obtain a written contract.
- Make sure you understand the terms before you sign anything.
- Put all change orders in writing.
Avoid making final payment until you have received a lien release from suppliers and subcontractors.
